Sky Harbor International Airport Automated Train Project
Phoenix, Arizona
Welcome to the Hensel Phelps Construction Co. Sky Harbor automated train system web site.
The City of Phoenix is transforming the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport with a new Automated Train
System to enhance the passenger movements within the airport and also provide a connection to the City's
new light rail system. The first stage of the project will be completed by 2012. It will link the 44th Street light
rail station, the East Economy Parking lot and Terminal 4 of the airport.
Why an automated train? Sky Harbor, like many of the nation's and the world's airports, suffers from rising
traffic congestion. Currently, the airport serves 42 million passengers per year, and this number is projected
to rise to 45 to 50 million by 2013, when the automated train system is complete. The goal is to remove about
20,000 cars and trucks - up to 20% of the traffic circling Sky Harbor - from the airport area. The system will
address passenger needs, alleviate roadway traffic and pollution, and link the airport to the Valley's light
rail system.
What will the automated train system look like? Its driverless cars will roll on rubber wheels, elevated in some
areas and on ground level in others.
We invite potential subcontractors to visit this web site often to see the opportunities that will be available for
partnering with Hensel Phelps Construction Co. for the construction work that needs to be done.
